"Max Muncy hits a smash in the left side hole..."

Anyone who watches Max Muncy hit knows that in real life, he's NEVER hit a ground ball to the left side. Like... EVER. The dude is the poster-child (especially last year) of the "3 true outcomes" phrase (walk, K, HR).

But the Thunder will take the W.

Press Clippings / Opening Day 2024
Last post by Brendtmc -
Walk off's in Windy City and Tucson highlight Opening Day.

Rattlers 2, Wolves 0
Both teams offenses are cold, due in all likelihood to the weather which forced a nearly hour long rain delay in the 3rd inning.  Bats remain dormant after the delay and the game enters the bottom of the ninth at 0-0 with both teams combining for just eight hits.  After a walk to open the home half of the ninth, Rattler rightfielder Max Kepler falls behind 0-2 before working the count even.  The next pitch Kepler sees he deposits into the first row of seats in right field.  Windy City faithful head home wet but happy after the opening day win.

Thunder 6, Argos 5
A pair of doubles sandwiched around a walk ties the game and puts runners on 2nd and 3rd for Tucson in the ninth.  Max Muncy hits a smash in the left side hole that third baseman Elly De La Cruz gloves on a dive.  With no other option but to throw home in the hopes of cutting down the winning run, De La Cruz throws a dart to catcher Sean Murphy that is just a fraction late.  Randy Arozarena gets in just under the tag and Tucson comes back to steal the win, 6-5 from Mother Lode.

Hammers 5, ACL's 3
Paul Goldschmidt cracks a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth for Hawaiian, giving the Hammers the two run victory.

Runners 7, Rougarou 3
Entering the bottom of the seventh trailing 2-1, Chicago scores three in the 7th and three more in the 8th to secure the opening day home win.  Alex Verdugo goes 4-4 with a homer to pace the offense.

Sweets 6, Miners 5
A back and forth affair ends with the home team breaking on top in the seventh and holding on for the win.  Small ball gets the Sweets the lead in the seventh: a leadoff bunt single and stolen base puts Jake McCarthy in scoring position with no outs.  After a strikeout, three successive singles plate the go ahead and eventual winning runs for Walla Walla.

Robots 4, Kraken 2
Roxbury pitching shuts out Brooklyn on four hits through eight innings.  The ninth gets a little hairy with the Kraken getting on the board behind three ringing doubles, but Tanner Scott ends things for the Robots, securing the 4-2 victory.

Bums 6, Dogs 4
Gerrit Cole and Sonny Gray hook up in a pitchers duel.  Both pitch seven stellar innings, with Cole victimized by back to back errors by the Bums defense that plated three unearned runs in the sixth.  Entering the late innings trailing 4-2, Bako ties the game in the eighth on a Tristan Casas double and a sac fly.  Into extra innings, Bums right fielder Adolis Garcia hits a no doubt two run homer into the left field bleachers for the win.

Landlubbers 2, Madmen 1
A pitchers duel in Motor City between Matt Manning and Jose Berrios.  Both starters give up just four hits and one run with Manning pitching through seven innings and Berrios eight.  A lead off double by Vaughn Grissom in the ninth gives the visitors the winning run in scoring position.  Pinch hitter Willi Castro cashes in the run with a game winning single.

Auk 3, Yetis 2
Great starter Justin Verlander pitches seven strong innings, surrendering just one run on two hits while striking out seven.  The Auk offense cobbles together just enough, benefitting largely from two unearned runs for the victory.

Brewers 4, Koi 2
The bottom of the Brewers order makes the difference in this game.  The top of the order does nothing, but the 7, 8, and 9 hitters collect four hits and all four RBI to lead Grants Pass to the win.
