June 11-12

Game Highlights

Let's highlight a few streaking teams:

~ Santa Ana is beginning to distance themselves from . . . well, EVERYONE.  The Winds take the first two games in their matchup with Rolla to run their win streak to FIVE GAMES.  Of course, the way the Winds are going, that's more or less a weekly occurrence, so really . . . is it a highlight at all?

~ Great Auk runs their win streak to FIVE GAMES as well with a pair of home wins against Brooklyn.  The first game looks like it might be a barn burner as Brooklyn scores in each of the first three innings and Great matches them with a pair of runs in both the second and third.  Tied 4-4 after three, things are primed for a slugfest of a game.  From there though, Auk pitching shuts down Kraken hitters, allowing just two hits over the final six innings.  Meanwhile Auk hitters continue to pile on and Great runs away with a 16-4 shellacking of Brooklyn.  Game two is much closer.  With the hometown team clinging to a 2-1 lead entering the 8th, Brooklyn puts two runners on to open the inning.  After an hour long rain delay, Brooklyn pushes across the tying run just to see the Auk retake the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Brooklyn catcher Pedro Severino ties the game again in the top of the ninth with a solo homer into the left field seats.  The Auk are not to be denied their fifth straight win though, walking off with a 4-3 victory on Dansby Swanson's two out bases loaded single.

~ Phoenix really is on some kind of run.  On the heels of a ten game winning streak, the Miners are now on a SEVEN GAME winning streak and have won 17 of 19 games during the current stretch.  After a 5-0 complete game shutout of Motor City from Wade Miley in game one, the Miners win game two 6-2 thanks to a pair of three run homers from Adam Frazier and Tyler O'Neill.  While the offense has done their part over the 17-2 run Phoenix is on over the last three weeks, it has been a lock down pitching staff that has led the charge.  Miner pitchers have compiled a 2.09 ERA and held the opposition to three of fewer runs in 16 of the 19 games.  From two games under .500 to 13 games over, the Miners have shaved five games off their conference deficit and now sit in second place in the Frick.
