Title: GIG-2019 Round 3
Post by: Kyle on April 29, 2019, 11:23:03 AM
Check out the GIG-2019 standings (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bd71zMTCdfQWZAhjGA--hUUHqv8caswfPxTAzjUtLXo/edit#gid=0) after round 2.  Four GMs are currently tied for the lead with 11 points!  And as always, please check my tallies for accuracy.

Due to my lateness in posting these questions, I'm going to ask Rod to wait until Wednesday night to start running double-headers, which gives us about 60 hours to answer.  Good luck!

1) Points possible: 1
Let’s highlight the Harry Caray, cuz UP JUMPED THE DEVILS!  Off to a 17-9 start, Shane’s got his club looking like legit competitors for the Caray, along with the usual suspects (ACLs and defending champ Hogs).  While the ACLs have a one-game lead, which team will be sitting on top after this cycle of games?
Current standings:
ACLs 18-8
Devils 17-9
Hogs 15-11
Rougarou 11-15
Robots 9-17

2) Points possible: 3
Three starting pitchers have yet to give up a HR, and they’re all in the Scully: The Blues’ Chris Sale and Stephen Strasburg, and the Koi’s Kyle Freeland.  Sale and Freeland are scheduled to start 3 games in this cycle of games, but Strasburg will only get 2 starts.  Consider that Sale and Freeland had better numbers than Strasburg in real life as you contemplate your answer.
Will any still boast that 0 HR rate? (yes or no)
If you say “no,” and get it right, that’s 2 points.  If you say “yes,” it’s worth 1 point, with a bonus question worth TWO points: Name the pitcher.

3) Points possible: 3
Three hitters have current hit streaks of 12 or more games: Lakeview’s Cody Bellinger (13), Brooklyn’s Jean Segura (13), and Scurvy’s Starlin Castro (12).
For 1 point: Which of these players will end up with the longest hitting streak by the end of this cycle?
Regardless of whether your player has the best streak, where will it end?  (And yes, you can answer “26” which would mean his streak would continue into Round 4.)  Two points for nailing the number, 1 if you’re one off.

4) Points possible: 3
Let’s have some fun with Lakeview’s Walker Buehler and his horrid start (8.10 ERA after 5 starts).  He’s slated to start 2 games in this cycle.  His opponents are at home against the Rum Runners (5/3), who rank 18th in runs scored; and the Madmen on the road (5/8), who rank 14th.
What will Buehler’s ERA be at the end of this cycle?  3 points for being within 0.10, 2 points for being within 0.50, 1 point for being within 1.00.

5) Points possible: 3
Home Run Watch!  And this is a fun one… Go ahead and take 3 seconds to guess the HR leader after the first 26 games in MSB.  I’ll wait…. If you guessed Lakeview’s Eddie Rosario (heck, we might call GIG Round 3 the “Lakeview round”), I’m buying you lunch!  I kid you not, the strong-side platoon man with a .271 OBP is leading all Mutineers with 9 jacks.  He had 24 on the season in real life, so SSS (small sample size) being what it is, this is not jaw-dropping.  But surprising nonetheless.
For one point: Name the player who will be leading MSB in HRs come May 13.
Bonus: How many HRs will the player you named have? (2 for nailing it, 1 for one off)

Total points possible for round three: 12.

Edit: we already know the pitchers in question #2 all gave up bombs, diminishing the total points possible from 13 to 12.

2) Yes, do I get another two points if I pick two?  Sale if no, add Freeland if yes
I thought about that when I was creating the question, but decided against it and worded it specifically.  Toward the second half of the season, I'll start giving "risk" questions (higher points with a potential for negative points) to give guys who are lagging behind chances to catch up.  But for the first half, I'm gonna keep it simpler.

Dang... Sale gave up a HR to the Koi's Carlos Santana already...

And in the SAME GAME, Freeland gave up THREE HR's (2 to Muncy, one to Suarez).  Did anyone pick Strasburg??  I'm gonna check...

Edit: Coy, Don, and Brendt picked Strasburg.  And of course a number of you said "No" (that they'd all give up a HR).

Haha!  I think the way to win this is just consistency.  We're all gonna have a few really good weeks, and a ton of bad ones.  My guess is the winner will have maybe HALF the total points possible.

So far I'm way below half the total points.  But 6 points was better than expected.

Do you have the results for this week?

Yes, answers are in reply #21.
