Title: GIG - Round 11
Post by: Scurvy Dogs on September 08, 2020, 11:13:31 PM
Here it is boys, the final GIG questions of the year. Lots of ways to shake up the final standings. Enjoy...

1)   For question #1 we’re going to take the basic format from question #1 from the last time I ran GIG, but tweak it a little. This time from each division pick the team that will have the best record over this final stretch. Risk/reward for each pick and there are multiple factors in play – current standings, playing time limits, resting players for the postseason, etc. So here we go:
a.   Vin Scully
   Miners (+1, -5)
   Blues (+2, -4)
   Bums (+3, -3)
   Dogs (+4, -2)
   Koi (+5, -1)
b.   Bob Ueker
   Brewers (+1, -5)
   Argos (+2, -4)
   Sweets (+3, -3)
   Cuttys (+4, -2)
   Rainiers (+5, -1)
c.   Harry Caray
   ACL’s (+1, -5)
   Rougarou (+2, -4)
   Cache Hogs (+3, -3)
   Devils (+4, -2)
   Robots (+5, -1)
d.   Ernie Harwell
   Kraken (+1, -5)
   Rum Run (+2, -4)
   Rattlers (+3, -3)
   Madmen (+4, -2)
   Landlubbers (+5, -1)

2)   This season has been dominated by the ACL’s, so it only feels right to have a couple final questions about them.
a.   They are currently beating their opponents by a little more than 4 runs a game. For 2 points, during this final stretch will their average margin of victory be greater than 5.0, between 4.5-5.0, between 4.0-4.5, between 3.5-4.0, or less than 3.5? For 5 points you can go way out on a crazy-town limb and say they will be outscored.
b.   Three SP (Minor = 20-1, Soroka = 18-1, Ryu = 15-1) have pitched a combined 539+ innings and have 3 losses between them. Amazing. For 2 points, of the three SP listed above who will have the most losses at the end of the season? Ties will count as a correct answer, but if you’re wrong you will lose 2 points.
c.   Do you realize Sano is slugging .709? Which would lead the league by a healthy margin if he qualified (Trout is currently #1 at .667). But it’s not like this is small-sample size bias, the guy has 412 PA so he’s just under the qualifying limit. I also looked it up, there’s been exactly 35 seasons of a real-life player slugging more than .700 and you’ll see a lot of Ruth and Bonds on that list – so rarified air indeed. For 2 points will Sano finish the season with a slugging percentage greater than .705? I was going to do .700 since it was a more “round” number, but I felt there might not be enough AB left in the season to justify a -.010 drop in slugging percentage. But a .004 drop seemed plausible.

3)   In honor of the passing of Lou Brock this week, lets have a SB question. Villar is leading the league with 49, followed by Turner with 41, and Mondesi with 39.
a.   Who will lead the league in SB? Villar (+1, -10) or the Field (+10, -0).
b.   Brock averaged 49 SB per year (he averaged 58 per 162 games). For one point, will anyone other than Villar reach the 49 SB plateau? Yes or No

4)   Tom Seaver also passed away so we better have a question about him too.
a.   Three times Seaver lead the league in WHIP and finished his career with a 1.121 WHIP. Our current leaders are Greinke (0.98), Verlander (0.98), Kershaw (1.01), Flaherty (1.01), Soroka (1.03). Who will lead the league in WHIP? 1 point for Greinke or Verlander, 2 points for Kershaw or Flaherty, 3 points for Soroka, 5 points for the field
b.   Six times Seaver lead the league in K/9 and five times he lead the league in strikeouts. Trust me, Cole is going to win both these categories for us (296 K’s, 13.9 K/9) which makes that question boring. So instead, who finishes second?
i.   Strikeouts: Verlander (260) or Scherzer (254)? 1 point for Verlander, 2 points for Scherzer. I could go a million points for the field as it’s not going to happen. So no field choice on this one. In the off chance it actually end up being the field no one will get any points and I’ll scrub the forum database of any reference that I said it wasn’t possible.
ii.   K/9: Scherzer (12.4), Darvish (11.80), Verlander (11. 80), Ray (11.4). 1 point for Scherzer, but -3 if you are wrong (since he’s got a healthy lead), 3 points for Verlander or Ray, 5 points for Ray, 10 point for the field.

5)   Finally, there are still some good races left.
a.   Scully – Miners (90-55) or Blues (86-59)? 1 point for the Miners, 3 for the Blues
b.   Uecker – Brewers (77-68 but in a freefall), Argos (76-69), or Sweets (74-71)? One point for the Brewers, 2 for Argos, 3 for Sweets
c.   Harwell – Kraken (86-59) or Rum Runners (83-62)? 1 point for the Kraken, 3 for the Rum Runners
d.   Frick 2nd Wild Card, who gets left out? I’ll just reverse the point totals above. 1 point for the Sweets, 2 for the Argos, 3 for the Brewers
e.   KML Wild Card – the teams are already decided (unless the Cache Hogs or Rattlers do something historic). But this one gets a little messy with the fact that the Kraken and RR are battling for the Harwell yet. So instead lets just do a mano-vs-mano battle between the Rum Runners and Rougarou (82-63). Who finishes with a better record? 1 point for the Rum Runners, 2 for the Rougarou

6)   I know I said finally on the last question but there is one more thing I wanted to discuss. The Brewers are in process of doing something truly historic, trying to hold onto their Uecker divisional lead while losing 17 of their last 18 games, and counting.
a.   Will the Brewers finish these final 17 games above .500 (meaning 9-8 or better)? 3 points for Yes, 2 points for No.
b.   If you said No lets go for some more points (hence the extra point given to the Yes answer in A). Will they finish above .300 (meaning 6-11, 7-10, or 8-9)? 2 points for Yes but -1 if you are wrong, 1 point for No.
c.   If you said No I’ll give you one final chance for points. Will they finish above .200 (meaning 3-14, 4-13, or 5-14)? 2 points for Yes but -1 if you are wrong, 5 points for No (They can’t keep losing like this right? I mean they would have to finish the season either 1-35, 2-34, or 3-33 for this outcome to be possible. So I’m willing to reward one final shot at bonus points if you think this could actually happen).

Dan asked a great question to me via email...

This cycle goes through the end of the season. This is not a typical 13 game cycle.

Yeah, I was in 2nd place until I updated the standings with R8 and R10, and now sit in 4th.  With a goose egg for this round, that's gonna hurt.

b) N/A
c) N/A
