Gauging interest in Diplomacy
We will be winding down free agency in a few weeks and with a couple months before the minor league draft a few of us thought it would be a good time to float the idea of a game of Diplomacy.
For those that aren't familiar, Diplomacy is a board game from the mid 50's rumored to be played by everyone form Asmiov to Cronkite to Kennedy and Kissinger. The game is well suited for being played online through private messages on forums and emails.
7 players play Great Powers of Europe on the eve of World War 1. As a leader of one of the Great Powers, Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia or Turkey, your goal is to conquer the European world, but you can't do it alone. You'll rely on others to enter into agreements of non-aggression, demilitarized zones, or support you into enemy territory. But as you succeed the temptation for allies to turn on you becomes greater and greater. 95% of this game is convincing others to do what you want them to do and about 5% is tactics on the actual board.
The game would require responding and sending a couple of emails a day and submitting "orders" a couple of times a week. The actual time commitment could be anywhere from 1 hour per week up to 30 minutes a day depending on how much you get into the game.
