Batters vs Pitchers

So when I had to create 2 teams for Week 6 (split up between batters and pitchers) it got me thinking. Which is usually a scary concept :)

What if you fielded a team of nothing but pitchers (both SP and RP) vs a team consisting of only batters? Who would win? Obviously the batters would struggle pitching, but they would have the advantage in the field and at the plate. And vice versa for the pitchers. Would the advantage pitching make up for the fact that the pitchers would probably be best hoping for a walk at the plate?

Discuss here and later this week I'll sim a 162 game series between the 2 teams. I'll disable the usage otherwise that will skew the results. I'll post the 25 man rosters later.

Interesting.  My guess would be the team of pitchers would suffer the most.  They are VERY specific anymore.  Expecting them to field positions and actually produce more than one run a game seems like a very tall order to me.  Every player can throw the ball, so I don't think it would be near as hard for the position players to pitch.  Especially since they'd be pitching to pitchers.

OK, so to answer your question, I think I'd have to agree with Brendt.  I suppose if I were managing the team with all pitchers, I'd set the tendency to work the count well, for sure.  But unless you had Bumgarner, Greinke, Kershaw, Sabathia, Vargas, Syndergaard, et al, the pitchers just aren't gonna get on base enough to score more than 2 runs a game, conservatively.

I don't know, the batters are going to be historically bad pitchers. Even if the guys at the plate are, well, terrible. But pitching is going to really really bad.

I could have done things a little differently but this is where I ended up.

For example Richard (57 AB, .123/.167/.193) and Hellickson (33 AB, .091/.167/.182) and Pivetta (44 AB, .068/.068/.068) I could have used in the pitcher lineup instead of Tepera, Castro, Delgado but I also wanted their innings pitched in the rotation.

And some of my bench players are better than the starters (ahem, Pujols) but AB came into play some there too.

It's not perfect, but I spent a couple hours on it. Let me know what you think...

I need to setup a schedule and sim the games yet, but its late and I need to make some FA bids yet so I'll do that later this week.

Sorry, I never got around to running the games until tonight. And it was a blowout...

The Batters won pretty easily, 103-59 for a .636 winning percentage over the Pitchers. They scored 1456 runs (almost 9 a game) and gave up 1117 (almost 7 a game). So the pitchers did pretty good to score 7 runs, they just gave up too many. I wonder how much fielding came into play. The other factor of course is that the rosters were generated from Week 6 FA guys, so it's very plausible that the talent pool was deeper for the batters.

Some stats:
SP
Gimenez = 16-4 with 1 save, 8.24 ERA, 149 innings, 216 hits, 129 walks, 123 K's, 18 HR, 115 games, 33 GS
Montero = 4-7 with 2 saves , 9.25 ERA, 117 innings, 189 hits, 111 walks, 100 K's, 12 HR, 72 games, 32 GS
Sucre = 10-8 with 4 saves, 5.75 ERA, 133 innigns, 162, hits, 104 walks, 123 K's, 14 HR, 86 games, 33 GS
Dyson = 0-6 (0 saves), 8.41 ERA, 92 innings, 134 hits, 95 walks, 85 K's, 13 HR, 31 games, 31 GS
Gomes = 1-5 (0 saves), 8.53 ERA, 82 innings, 123 hits, 91 walks, 63 K's, 6 HR, 31 games, 31 GS

RP
Garcia = 12-3 (0 saves) 5.95 ERA, 141 innings, 181 hits, 91 walks, 134 K's, 17 HR, 46 games, 0 GS
Nava = 14-2 with 3 saves, 3.39 ERA, 162 innings, 167 hits, 45 walks, 156 K's, 12 HR (Cy Young???), 43 games, 0 GS
Narvaez = 11-5 with 4 saves, 6.11 ERA, 141 innings, 180 hits, 83 walks, 125 K's, 21 HR, 53 games, 0 GS
SSmith = 12-4 with 2 saves, 3.74 ERA, 154 innings, 174 hits, 60 walks, 124 K's, 12 HR, 46 games, 0 GS
KSmith = 11-6 with 3 saves, 6.39 ERA, 142 innings, 190 hits, 94 walks, 116 K's, 17 HR, 55 games, 0 GS
Wieters = 7-6 with 18 saves, 5.10 ERA, 95 innings, 120 hits, 65 walks, 88 K's, 4 HR, 64 games, 0 GS

The RP clearly fared better. I'm guessing that was because they were most likely utilized in shorter stints than the SP. The computer GM also didn't hesitate to bring in Gimenez (115 games, trying to kill him???), Montero, and Sucre in relief as well. Interestingly Dyson and Gomes didn't once come out of the bullpen.
