May 16 - 17

May 16:

Not to be outdone by Scherzer the night before, Giolito of the Cache Hogs went 7 IP, allowed only 4 hits+walks, and struck out nine giving the Hogs their second win against the Kraken.  Two impressive pitching performances in a row against the Harwell-leading Kraken.

In the second game of this battle of brothers, the under-performing Joc Pederson finally showed up for the Brewers.  Going 2 for 4 with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs, Pederson put this one on his shoulders and helped to drive Stroman of the Bums from the game after 3 innings.  Even so, without a ninth inning meltdown by the Brewers relief corps, this one wouldn't have been nearly as close. Incidentally, the Brewers took the game on May 17th giving them this Crews' series.

After his performance tonight, most of the league's GMs were on the phone asking the Scurvy Dogs if Keston Hiura were available.  Coming into the game, Hiura was hitting .329 with 9 HRs, 25 runs, and 36 RBIs.  He added to those totals with another 3 hits and a run, but perhaps more important is his defense including turning a double play in the bottom of the 4th to stop a Cutthroats rally

May 17:

The Rum Runners did their best to put some heat on the ACLs juggernaut by taking them into extra innings.  But like most other games, it was for naught as the ACLs were able to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th to take their 7th win in a row and, if I remember correctly, their 20th win in the last 21 games.  This is becoming ridiculous.

The Miners weren't bad today and were able to chase Bailey in the fourth after he had thrown 100 pitches, but the Rainiers were the only team capable of putting together some consecutive hits as they beat the Miners 3-1 for their first win in twelve games. This was largely on the shoulders of Matt Adams who drove in two on his one hit (a double) of the night.

After two incredibly close losses (2 runs and 1 run) to the Devils, the Landlubbers were able to turn things around and hand the Devils a 1 run loss tonight.  They can give their thanks to some clutch hitting in the bottom of the 9th and some poor defense by the Devils.  After Matt Olson homered to right, Brian Anderson lined a single to shallow center and was able to move over to second on a wild throw by Junior Guerra.  6 pitches later, Schoop grounded a double down the third base line and the Landlubbers were swarming from the dugout to celebrate when Anderson crossed home.

No love for a combined one-hitter (a wimpy ground ball single) for Odorizzi (7.2 IPs) and Joe Kelly?  I'm starting to think David and Rod are conspiring to suppress any good press from their perennial pennant-winning Blues rivals. :)
