April 27-29

Series Highlights

Lakeview @ Ankeny
Lakeview takes game 1 with a 19 hit attack in a 10-4 whitewash.  A six run sixth inning highlighted by Yuli Gurriel's 3-run home run blows the game open.  In game 2, Rougarou starter Alex Wood does most the heavy lifting with six innings of one run ball.  Ankeny claws back with two runs in the 7th, but Pierce Johnson and Garrett Whitlock shut the door to lift Lakeview to a 4-3 win.  Game 3 goes twelve innings and after Gary Sanchez homers in the top of the inning to give the Rougarou the lead, closer Garrett Whitlock takes the mound again in search of his league leading 8th save.  Whitlock has been a bit of high wire act so far this season and tonight is no different.  Juan Soto singles and Gavin Lux triples to tie the game, and after back to back intentional walks, pinch hitter Carlos Santana sends a deep drive to right field.  The sacrifice fly salvages one win in the series for the home town team.  Lakeview wins the series 2-1

Rolla @ Moonstruck
The Blues welcome Rolla to town and double up the Sweets in game 1, 6-3.  A five run sixth inning propels the Blues to the win behind seven strong innings from Alex Cobb.  In game 2, Moonstruck takes a 3-1 lead into the late innings but Rolla small balls two runs in both the 7th and 8th innings to come from behind and steal (literally, Manny Machado and Christian Walker pull off a rare double steal in the 7th inning rally) a 5-3 win.  Rolla wins the rubber match, 12-5, in a game that is much closer than it sounds.  The Sweets put the game away with a five run 9th inning.  Rolla wins the series 2-1

Chicago @ Hawaiian
Pitching rules this series.  In game 1 the Rum Runner staff, led by starter Luis Castillo, hold the Hammers to five hits and strikeout 11 in a 4-0 victory.  The Garden Hammers flip the script in game 2 with a 5-1 win behind Marco Gonzalez.  Gonzalez completes his own gem, twirling a masterful 3 hit, one run nine innings.  Game 3 sees Tanner Houck and Ranger Suarez match each other through 6 1/2 scoreless innings.  Both teams open the bullpen gates for the late innings, HGH getting the better of that portion of the matchup, scoring two in the bottom of the 7th and holding the Runners in check to take a 2-1 win and the series.  HGH wins the series 2-1

Phoenix @ Mother Lode
Pitching is the name of the game in this series as well.  The two teams combine to score just 15 runs over the three games, Mother Lode outscoring Phoenix 9-6.  Aaron Nola leads the Miners in game 1 with a beautiful four hit, 13 K complete game shutout.  Tyler O'Neill clubs his 7th and 8th home runs to lead the scoring.  It takes the whole tribe and ten innings, but six Argo pitchers restrain the Miners in game 2 and Mitch Hanniger picks a good time to hit his first homer of the season, cracking a two run walk off blast in the 10th.  Game 3 sees Wade Miley oppose Jack Flaherty, both starters off to rough starts.  The two duel for six-plus innings though, pitching arguably their best games of the season.  Mitch Hanniger is again the middle of the winning rally, singling in the first Argo run before scoring ahead of Ryan Zimmerman's 2-run homer.  Mother Lode wins the game, 3-2, and the series.  Mother Lode wins the series 2-1

Santa Ana @ Brooklyn
Santa Ana shuts out Brooklyn 6-0 in game 1 as Corbin Burnes and Dylan Floro subdue the Kraken offense.  Brooklyn comes back in game 2, hitting Lucas Giolito hard in a 6-2 win.  Game 3 starts with an 11 run top of the first inning for the Winds.  Santa Ana follows their big first with another run in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth, and four in the fifth.  No, that is not a typo . . . the Winds rip off six doubles and NINE home runs among 24 hits, work 8 walks, and blow out Brooklyn 26-5.  Max Stassi doubles, homers twice, and drives in 7 runs and Adam Engel doubles twice, homers, and drives in five.  Santa Ana wins the series 2-1

Arizona @ Scurvy
Scurvy's Frankie Montas pairs with two relievers in a three hit, one run masterpiece in a 7-1 game 1 win, the Dogs SEVENTH STRAIGHT victory.  Their EIGHTH STRAIGHT win in game 2 is a little more tense.  Arizona jumps out to a 7-1 lead before the Dogs rally in the late innings with four in the 8th and the winning runs in the 9th on Albert Pujol's game winning home run.  Game 3 heads to the 8th tied at three runs apiece.  In the top half of the inning a hit batsman, walk and infield single loads the bases, and then Giancarlo Stanton unloads a grand slam deep to left to provide the winning runs as the Koi end Scurvy's win streak.  Scurvy wins the series 2-1

Ann Arbor @ Windy City
Landlubber first baseman Matt Olson continues his big start with a pair of home runs and six RBI and Ann Arbor takes game 1, 7-2.  Game 2 starts with Windy City racing out to a 7-2 lead after two innings.  Ann Arbor claws back in the middle innings to tie the score at seven and then take a 9-7 lead in the 8th inning on an Austin Riley home run.  Ann Arbor closer Kenley Jansen unravels in the ninth however, and coughs up the lead.  Rattlers DH Vladimir Guerrero hits a walk off single in the tenth to give Windy City a hard fought 10-9 win.  Game 3 ends in walk off fashion for a second consecutive game when DJ LeMahieu singles through a drawn in infield, giving the Rattlers a 4-3 win.  Windy City wins the series 2-1

Pittsburgh @ Grants Pass
Jameson Taillon pitches eight strong innings, taking Pittsburgh to a 5-1 victory in game 1.  Grants Pass' offense bounces back in the next two games, scoring seven runs in both.  In game 2, starter Luis Garcia runs his record to a perfect 4-0, pitching six two hit shutout innings.  In game 3, Eric Fedde and three relievers do the job.  Jorge Soler homers in each game to lead the Brewer offense.  Grants Pass wins the series 2-1

Roxbury @ Motor City
Motor City takes game 1 as Jordan Montgomery works in and out of trouble through seven innings to hold the Roxbury offense in check.  Javier Baez collects three hits, including his 5th homer of the season.  A five run fifth inning leads the Madmen in game 2 and the Motor City pitching staff again works in and out of trouble but keeps the Robots down in a 5-4 win.  Roxbury does not go so quietly in game 3, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings on their way to a 10-4 win, salvaging one win in the series.  Motor City wins the series 2-1

Bako @ Great
Bako's strongest starter in the early going has been Marcus Stroman.  Stroman is certainly not dominant in this game, striking out just two over seven innings, but he induces weak contact throughout the game and the Bums complete a 6-0 shutout in game 1.  Auk ace Logan Webb turns the tables in game 2, pitching his own 7.2 innings of shutout ball.  The Great Auk take a nail biting 1-0 win.  Franmil Reyes has started off the season white hot, and he continues in game 3 with a 4-4 showing, pacing the Bums to a 6-3 win.  Reyes' six home runs and 20 RBI leads the Bako offense in the early going.  Bako wins the series 2-1
