June 2-3

Game Highlights

June 2nd

~ Led by the bottom of the order, Phoenix rattles off their NINTH STRAIGHT WIN, 4-1 versus Hawaiian.  Seventh and eighth place hitters Luis Urias and Trent Grisham go back to back in the fourth, and Urias adds his second homer of the game in the seventh to back a five hit, one run showing from the pitching staff.

~ Chicago's Blake Snell keeps his record perfect, pitching six innings of three hit, eight K ball to win his sixth game of the season.  Paul Sewald and Aroldis Chapman complete the Runners 4-1 victory.  Tom Murphy is the hitting hero with a bases clearing three run double in the first inning.

June 3rd

~ TEN WINS IN A ROW for Phoenix.  This one is an extra innings nail biter, walked off when Sal Perez follows Kris Bryant and Cedric Mullins singles with the game winning hit in the 10th.

~ Sixteen innings in Arizona before Giancarlo Stanton plates the winning run with a seeing eye single the opposite way.  The Koi down Ankeny, 2-1.

~ Yu Darvish and Max Scherzer have been on different paths so far this season.  Scherzer is a perfect 7-0 with a sub-2.00 ERA, and leads the league in WHIP (0.76), BAA (a ridiculous .137), and OPS allowed (.483).  Darvish is 1-7 with a 5.85 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  When the two hook up in Grants Pass the paper shows a drastic mismatch.  That, however, is why the games are played.  Scherzer is his usual dominant self with seven, one hit shutout innings, and on this night, Darvish matches him.  Ignoring his rough start, Darvish pitches into the seventh, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out nine.  The Brewers wait until the very end, but a single and a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth sets up the home town team for a comeback win.  A sac bunt moves the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Asdubal Cabrera lines out to third and Jorge Soler strides to the plate with two outs.  The way the Brewers season has gone to date, much like Darvish's, one would expect Soler and his .160 batting average to hit an easy can of corn to shallow left field or ground out meekly to second base . . . but like Darvish's showing . . . not tonight.  Soler rips a double off the left field wall, scoring two and sending the Brewers to the 2-1 win.

~ Lakeview has scuffled through the first third of the season, sitting nine games under .500 despite a positive run differential, but one Rougarou not scuffling has been ace Walker Buehler.  Buehler pitches another beautiful game, completing seven shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.23.  The Rougarou offense backs their ace with four early runs and three relievers close out Buehler's eighth win of the season, a 4-0 win over Pittsburgh.
