Coming up Aces: Argonauts and Auk Strike a Deal

It's hard to say how many teams have had discussions for Max Fried this offseason. But it's pretty safe to say that Fried has been the most talked about player on the 2023 offseason market thus far. But talk most of that talk has been cheap.

Then the cheap talk shifted to real talk Thursday morning. After several weeks of what at times was hourly debate and discussion, the Mother Lode Argonauts finally met the steep asking price of the Great Auk, and settled on a prospect and draft pick rich deal to get Fried (6M/Arb2) and Alex Vesia (2.55M/23) in Argonaut gold.

For the Argonauts, Fried is a key cog in their push for relevancy. Heading into the offseason, the offense looked strong, but injuries and poor production left Sandy Alcantara alone to carry the load. With a prior acquisition and nearly completed, rotation depth has been building, but all baseball junkies know, it's the dudes at the top of the Rotation that make you or break you.  With Alcantara and Fried at the top, the Argonauts 2023 season is looking golden.

For the Auk, this is an important step into a world of the rebuild where adding young prospects has proven time and time again to be the best way to build a team that will stand the test of the time. With the Argonaut's prospects Ricky Tiedemann and Daniel Susac, their second round pick (2.11) and Kwang-Hyun Kim's contract (4.5M/23) adding to a stellar 2022 draft which has already netted several top 100 prospects, the Auk are well on their way back up.

The Mother Lode Argonauts send Ricky Tiedemann (MiL), Daniel Susac (MiL), Pick 2.11, and Kwang-Hyun Kim (4.5M/23) to the Great Auk for Max Fried (6M/Arb2) and Alex Vesia (2.55M/23).

A+ negotiations Bob. Great working with you and can't wait for the next trade.

The Great Auk confirms the trade details..    Trade did take a while to hammer out.   Several times the talks broke down.    I was torn if one top top prospect was better or worse than several lower (but still top 100) prospects.    I went with the higher singular prospect.   One thing I learned is "can't miss prospects" do miss quite often.    Hazard of our game.

With a solid #2 now in the rotation Mother Lode should have enough cap space to buy a #3 in free agency    With their hitting they will be amoung the favorites this year.   With their just promoted rookies and still a loaded farm system they will be a force for many years.
