Recently an owner reached out to the CO with the following question and I thought it would be a good exercise to test the league. This is our first year of ARB2 players.
The question:
What's the answer? Note, we have to assume some additional information.
One example, I have 3 players eligible for arbitration Miguel Almonte and Luke Jackson have a rookie status and are on their 2019 contract. Michael Wacha is on ARB 1. My other "rookies" are on 2020 or 2021 contracts.
- Miguel Almonte - 0.0 WAR
- Luke Jackson - 0.3 WAR
- Michael Wacha 0.8 WAR and $2.5m contract
If I offer any of these players Arbitration, they would be awarded the following contracts.
- Miguel Almonte - $1,000,000
- Luke Jackson - $1,000,000
- Michael Wacha - $3,000,000 ($2.5m + $.5m
If I do not offer Arbitration each of these players would become free agents.
All this sound correct?
Question: A Rookie on a 2019 contract was promoted when? Is 2019 their third season, or their fourth?
Promoted around 2016 so a 2019 contract is their fourth year.
Our rosters use real world years though the stats are based on the year prior.
I think I'd score 100% - though I admit it's taken me a while to fully grasp it. But I like this whole arbitration thing - a lot.
So, going forward, a player newly promoted to the major leagues will be listed as 'Rookie' and the year listed in the Contract column will be their fourth year and their first in the arbitration process?
IE: Ramon Laureano was recently promoted by the Bums. He is listed as 'Rookie' with a 2022 contract. So he is $500K for 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2022 he will either be offered arbitration (and I'm assuming his designation in the 'Status' column will change to ARB 1) or he will be a Bum for a fourth year at $500K on the Rookie contract and then be a FA.
Sound about right?
That's exactly right Brendt.
Then I guess I score 100% too. ;-)
It does. I would like to know how you got a year of Wacha at $500K. Unless I have a bad listing of the Arb 1 raises, the minimum is $1M. Of course he does pitch for the cardinals so he's basically useless regardless.
Of course I read the math backwards, the 0.5M raise is from the 2018 WAR season.
Nothing to see here!
