Title: Expansion Draft Discussion
Post by: Brendtmc on November 13, 2017, 12:14:19 PM
I'd be very interested to hear some of your thoughts on the selections in the draft from an outside perspective.

I can tell you my brother and I are apparently working off the exact same target list.  Already at least twice that I know of the two names I've had for a round have been the player he chose right before me and then my selection.  After playing in leagues with him for the last 15 years you'd think I'd be used to it . . . but it still chaps my hide every time he steals a player that should be mine!

I figured 2020 contracts would go off the board first and even though there have been a number of them taken I'm actually surprised it's not a little higher a number after five rounds.

D,

I purposely didn't put together a draft board for the expansion draft. One it would be time consuming and two there would be no direct benefit to me other than the exercise of doing something like that.

I think so far there is a high value on pitching, although it is cost controlled and cheap with the exception of Lester and Arrieta. The most volatile and unpredictable commodity in baseball is a starting pitcher. Like any draft there is usually a run that begins and the position player run will likely be a long one to get those younger players.

Being in multiple leagues with your brother, I'm sure you two have a lot of common tendencies and building habits and it's not a surprise he's picking off the players you are after.

I agree.  I expected a run on pitching early as well.  What's actually surprised me has been the number of relievers taken so far.  Talk about a volatile and unpredictable commodity!  Of course, all of the relief arms taken so far have been of the cost controlled variety.  Most for long term at that.

Yeah.  I obviously taught him too well...

These teams do have usage to fill and they have a maximum amount of salary they can spend based upon what they select from the expansion drafts.

I see another player in Flores who was traded at some point last season.

This tells me one thing, there was no direct ties to that player that was acquired recently.
