World Series, Game Three

CHICAGO BASE BALL CLUB GROUNDS, October 31 -
By T.W. Pennington
Special Sporting Correspondent to The Chicago Daily Intelligencer

Your humble chronicler, having witnessed nigh on three decades of the National Game, must report a most peculiar exhibition was contested this eve betwixt the Bums Club and the Sea Wolves aggregation. The former emerged victorious by a count of seven runs to three, though not before displaying both the scientific and, regrettably, the more modern elements of our cherished pastime.

[Your correspondent pauses here to note that the modern practice of serving heated peanuts in paper sacks continues to encourage unseemly behavior in the cheaper seats.]

The affair commenced as a gentlemanly pitcher's duel betwixt Mr. Sanchez (late of the Pacific Coast) and Mr. Bradish, both hurlers displaying admirable command of the sphere through three frames. The weather, at a brisk 53 degrees Fahrenheit (as confirmed by my personal mercury thermometer), called to mind the great Chicago-Boston contest of '83, though today's players persist in wearing their trousers scandalously long.

Young Master Casas, who this observer has watched since his schoolboy days, disturbed the peace in the fourth chapter with a mighty wallop that sailed clear over the garden wall, much to the astonishment of the gathering. One cannot help but recall how the legendary King Kelly would have handled such an impudent display of power hitting.

The Bums subsequently mounted a most vigorous attack in the fifth inning, during which Master Witt Jr. (whose esteemed father I had the privilege of covering in his rookie campaign) drove a stinging two-base hit to the outfield gardens. This correspondent's personal scoring system, developed over 25 years in the press box, recorded it as "a mighty thwack to the nether regions of left field."

[At this juncture, your correspondent was forced to pause briefly to clean his spectacles, though missing nary a pitch.]

However, the Sea Wolves, showing remarkable pluck and determination, responded with a most extraordinary display in the seventh frame - three consecutive four-base hits, a spectacle this writer has not witnessed since the infamous "Elevated Ball" controversy of 1887. Such modern tendencies toward "home runs" threaten the very fabric of our scientific game.

The contest reached its denouement in the ninth inning, when the Bums tallied thrice more. Mr. Langeliers, whose grandfather once served as bat boy for the Providence Grays, distinguished himself with a sterling two-base hit during the proceedings.

Your faithful servant must conclude this account and repair to the telegraph office, but not before noting that today's players would do well to study the exemplary manner in which Pop Anson's lads handled the ash stick in the glorious summer of '76.
