Another Yeti promotion

The Everest Yetis promote Kumar Rocker to the 40-man roster and put him on a $500K rookie contract.

Thanks,
Larry

Hello folks

I saw this and had a question.   If a player didn't play in the prior MLB season (or even a previous season) so no MLB debut yet can a person be on the 40 man roster with a Mutiny League salary ?      I guess why not.   Just wondering.

I think this has happened before (I'm not 100% sure there), but I don't see why you couldn't do this. Why you would do this is another question since you would only get a player's rookie-year production before you decide to offer arbitration (and that's if Rocker gets the time in the majors next season).

I'll address a couple points here. I wasn't sure if promoting a minor leaguer before he had debuted in real life was allowed, so I checked with the CO last week. They confirmed that was fine.

Here's why I did this with Rocker and Frasso. I view it as "buying" an extra minor leaguer. I would gladly pay $1M-$2M to purchase draft picks to add minor leaguers to my system. That isn't allowed, but freeing up a slot by promoting guys early so I can use picks I have IS allowed. I am effectively going to be paying both Rocker and Frasso $1M each before I know how they're going to do in MLB, if they even make it there. I'm not getting nothing for my money - I got two more minor leaguers in my system and am buying time to see how Frasso and Rocker do next year.

After next season, I will have a decision to make on both - are they doing well enough to offer them arbitration for the last year of their rookie contract. I'll have one more year of info at that point. I could: 1) offer them arbitration (and then make a year-to-year decision for two more years after that on whether to continue to offer them arbitration - if they don't do much next year their arbitration raise would be minimal), 2) just keep them on rookie salary for their 4th year and then lose them, or 3) cut them then and there - having no further financial obligation to them. AND, I now have Luis Cova and Zyhir Hope in my system. That was $2M spread across two years well spent, in my opinion. The $1m spent this year would have been lost anyway. Next year's $1M is 1.1% of my $90M budget.

The specific reason I chose Frasso and Rocker is because they were two of my oldest prospects. They need to get going soon or they are going to be simple cuts. I can still potentially get 4 years of production at cheap prices out of them, if they prove worthy of going to arbitration with. I had other players I could have promoted instead, but the others are younger and I'd rather get four full, productive rookie years out of them.

Bottom line, it was all about squeezing two more young players into my system at a cost in dollars I was willing to pay (potentially including some arbitration years that will start earlier than they had to).

Make sense? ;)

I can see how you are thinking about these promotions, although I see the opportunity costs of these moves differently than you do. And of course, that difference is what gives variety to the league.

In my team's thinking, the cost control and production you get from rookie contracts are worth their weight in gold. As a Rays fan, I want to squeeze the extra 2% out of my roster, and one of my goals is trying to delay giving that rookie contract until the last possible moment. So, while I can see where you feel that these roster maneuvers are giving you a chance to draft Zyhair Hope, you are giving up the potential of 2 years of cheap production, tying up a small amount of cash (at least initially), tying up more money in the long-run (if they are successful starting in year 3), and tying up roster spots on unusual players next season. Now, I say all of that as a team that is always teetering on the edge of going over the salary cap and who sometimes has a 40-man roster, where I will want to play 37 or 38 of them, this means that I would place more of a value of keeping them on my minor league roster than promote.

Again, it is all a difference in the valuation of player contracts. If Cova and Hope break out, then this was a good move. If Rocker and Frasso have great seasons in 2027 or 2028 (when you might have lost them in free agency instead of controlling them, or you are paying higher prices in arbitration than just the rookie contract), then I'm not sure if this was a good move.

Promoted.

That right there is why this league is so much fun.  Two owners with two completely different views on how to build a team for long-term success.  Sadly for Larry, I fear that the biggest impediment to him winning a championship is being stuck in the Frick...  After nearly 20 years, I still can't figure out a way to reliably succeed in this division.
