Oct, 7th - One Game tie breaker
Seth Lugo (6-11, 5.68 ERA) vs. James Paxton (2-0, 4.97 ERA)
Neither starter has had much success this year. Lugo was demoted for his performance, and Paxton wasn't even brought up until recently. Both will look to make their season with a strong start today.
First Inning
Uneventful for both teams. Paxton goes 1-2-3 in the top of the inning on just seven pitches (all strikes). Lugo gives up a one out single, but induces a weak groundout from Ohtani and K's Franco to end the inning. It does take Lugo 28 pitches to work through the inning though.
Second Inning
In the top of the second, Candelario walks and Nick Fortes hits a deep shot into the left center bleachers to put Great up 2-0. Fly out, pop up, strikeout limits the damage for Scurvy.
In the bottom of the inning, Luis Robert leads off with a line drive double down the third base line and DJ Stewart knots the game with a two run homer of his own into the ight center bleachers. After Arenado grounds out to the pitcher, Lugo walks Cal Raleigh and gives up a single back through the box to put two runners on. Eddie Rosario strikes out for the second out and Berti hits a sharp grounder to the right side, but right at the second baseman who ends the threat with an easy throw to first.
Great 2, Scurvy 2
Third Inning
Top of the inning, a pair of singles, a force out and a walk loads the bases with two outs for Nick Fortes (.345 / .909 OPS in 42 games). Paxton escapes this time with a called strike three on Cal Raleigh.
Home half of the inning brings Shohei Ohtani to the plate to lead off and he takes a 3-2 pitch to straight away center for his 45th home run. With two outs, Stewart walks and Arenado singles to give the Dogs two runners on again. Cal Raleigh strikes out swinging though to leave the runners on.
Scurvy 3, Great 2
Fourth Inning
Paxton sets the Auk down 1-2-3 in the top of the frame, striking out Ozzie Albies for the second out.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Rosario lines a single through the hole on the left side and Jon Berti follows with a single up the middle, sending Rosario to third. Ohtani grounds to second, but busts it to first base and avoids the double play, allowing the run to score.
Scurvy 4, Great 2
Fifth Inning
Top of the inning, Alec Bohm singles and Carroll sends him to third with a two out single. Jeimer Candelario hits a line shot to center that Luis Robert is able to track down, saving at least one run.
Robert then leads off the bottom of the inning with his second hit and is standing on first when DJ Stewart cracks his second home run of the game. Bruno pulls Lugo for Brandon Williamson who who quickly records a ground out and fly out for the first two outs. Solano and Rosario single back to back to put runners on the corners again for Scurvy and Jon Berti grounds a liner just inside the first base line for an RBI double. Second and third, two outs with Ohtani stepping to the plate. The leading MVP candidate cues a ball to third and can't beat this one out.
Scurvy 7, Great 2
Sixth Inning
A lead off single by Fortes goes wasted in the top of the inning, and a one out Robert single in the bottom of the inning is also wasted.
Seventh Inning
Paxton gives way after six solid innings (5 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 ER) and 88 pitches. Scurvy couldn't have asked more of him. Ryan Pepiot takes the hill and gets into a little trouble with two outs when he walks Contreras and hits Carroll. The rookie steadies himself and gets Candelario swinging at a nasty pitch that dives into the dirt, requiring Raleigh to complete the K with a throw to first.
In the bottom of the inning, Williamson walks Solano to end his night and he's replaced by Buck Farmer. Farmer K's Rosario and induces Berti to ground out to end the inning.
Eighth Inning
Jordan Hicks take the mound after Pepiot's scoreless inning and promptly walks the lead off man. Charlie Blackmon pinch hits for Great with two outs and rips a double that is inches from going out of the yard, putting runners on second and third. Hicks gives way to James Karinchak who is greeted rudely by Lars Nootbaar who hits a bullet down the first base line for a two run double. A strikeout ends the inning but the Auk have cut into the lead.
A one out double by Franco in the home half goes nowhere as Robert and Stewart are unable to get the RBI hit.
Scurvy 7, Great 4
Ninth Inning
Top of the ninth, three outs away from HFA, Scurvy sends Karinchak back out to try and close the deal. Down to the last out, Candelario sends a 2-1 pitch into the right field bleachers to pull Great closer, but defensive replacement Josh Smith waves through a 1-2 inside fastball to end things.
Scurvy goes out to the big lead and then withstands late eighth and ninth inning rallies by Great to secure the 7-5 victory and earn home field advantage in their upcoming first round matchup with the Auk.
